THE BACKGROUND

Career and background

Born in Amsterdam, Van der Wiel made his Ajax first-team debut on 11 March 2007. He developed into an attacking full-back and won the Johan Cruijff young-player award for the 2009–10 season. His Ajax years brought two Eredivisie titles, including the 2011 championship that secured the club’s third star. He went on to win 46 Netherlands caps and started the 2010 World Cup final against Spain.Sources: Toronto FC · official signing announcement ↗ · AFC Ajax · official podcast ↗

A September 2012 move took him to Paris Saint-Germain, where he won four consecutive Ligue 1 titles. The club’s domestic cup successes accompanied regular Champions League football. He later spent a season with Fenerbahçe and a short spell at Cagliari before Toronto FC signed him in February 2018. Life after football became a central subject of his public work. In a 2026 interview, he described how losing the daily structure of training and matches had left him struggling with anxiety, panic attacks and his identity. Speaking openly brought responses from other players with similar experiences. He said those conversations encouraged him to make the discussion larger than his own story.Source: Flashscore · Emanuele Giulianelli interview ↗

His podcast Pressure follows that idea through conversations about the personal cost of achievement, including fear, setbacks and the demands of elite performance. Van der Wiel has said he wants athletes to recognise when they are struggling and feel able to talk. An Ajax podcast revisited his career and mental health in February 2026, describing the former defender as living in Dubai.Sources: Flashscore · Emanuele Giulianelli interview ↗ · AFC Ajax · official podcast ↗
