Franz Beckenbauer

Former footballer

Franz Beckenbauer was a German defender and coach known as Der Kaiser. A two-time Ballon d’Or winner, he won the World Cup as West Germany’s captain in 1974 and as coach in 1990. He died in January 2024.

Relationship history

Beckenbauer married Heidi Burmester in 2006. They had two children, Joel and Francesca, and remained married until his death in January 2024.

His first wife was Brigitte Wittmann, whom he married in 1966. They had sons Michael and Stephan. He later married Sybille Weimar in 1990; that marriage also ended in divorce.

Before his first marriage, Beckenbauer had son Thomas with his childhood girlfriend Ingrid Grönke. Photographer Diana Sandmann was his partner for about twelve years from the late 1970s, including his time playing in New York.
